2009-2010 Middle School MUN Advisor Handbook

September 29, 2009

Greetings YMCA Model United Nations Advisors!

Enclosed is the 2009-2010 Model United Nations Advisor Handbook. It should have
everything you need to get your group up and running this year.

A few things to note:

1. Conference dates are Thursday April 8 – Friday April 9, 2010.

2. Conference fees for this year are $180. As usual we, have scholarships available for
students who would not otherwise be able to attend. All scholarship students pay $75.

3. Please note that country requests are due on October 9, 2009, but you may make
them earlier. We will assign countries on a first-come, first-served basis. Please request
more countries that you will need so we will be able to give you enough, allowing for
countries that get assigned to other schools. Please note, however, that if you do not get
your country requests in until January (as some schools do Model UN as a second
semester project) that is no problem. We’ll be posting countries as they are selected on
our website at http://www.scymcayig.org.

4. In January, we will begin to train our high school resource staff, and if you would like
them to start visiting your school/club meetings, let me know and we’ll make those
arrangements.

5. We are continuing to look for new schools to be involved. If you are able to recruit a
new school that brings at least 10 students, we will give your school a $250 credit to
be used any way you see fit. Please contact me with schools and contacts, and I’ll do the
follow up.

Finally, the most important thing I need from you is confirmation of your participation this
year, and as good a guess as to how many students you will be bringing. We are required to
sign a contract with the conference center committing us to a certain number of participants, and
once we’ve signed that contract we cannot drop below that number. We can add participants, but
we will be charged for the contracted number whether they attend or not.

I’m looking forward to another great year of Model UN! Please let me know if there is anything I
can do to help you!
