Middle School Model United Nations

What is the SC YMCA Youth in Government Middle School Model United Nations?

The Middle School Model United Nations program is a one or two semester curriculum implemented in the schools with direction and leadership from the YMCA Youth in Government staff. The program culminates in a two-day Model United Nations conference in April. Student participants work in small groups to study a particular country, and write a proposal that is presented at the MUN conference. High school students provide leadership for this program.

When is the 2011 conference?

The 2011 conference will be April 7-8, 2011

Where is the conference held?

The Middle School Model United Nations Conference is held at YMCA’s Blue Ridge Assembly in Black Mountain, NC. Participants stay in hotel-like rooms with private bathrooms. Most rooms are more rustic thana traditional hotel rooms.  Included in the conference fees are lunch and dinner on Thursday and breakfast on Friday.

How do the High School students provide leadership?

High School students from across the state of South Carolina apply to be part of our High School Resource Staff. Out of the applications we select the best of the best to come and be exactly what their title calls them, a resource. Some take on leadership roles and run the council sessions and general assembly, but most of the Resource Staff are paired with individual countries and act as mentors to those participants. They may encourage a student to speak, help them set up their festival of nations both, or help them tweak a speech to support the proposal they brought to the conference. The goal is to give the middle school students someone they can both look up to and use as a resource to enhance their experience at the conference.

How do I apply to be part of the High School Resource Staff?

We generally begin the application process in early January and end around the middle on February. Check back next year during that time to apply.
